Thames River ‘set ablaze’ 350 years since Great Fire of London 1666

News Thames river set ablaze

The Great Fire of London will be recreated on the river Thames River next month to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the historic event.

Preparations are underway to create the 120-metre-long model of the skyline of 17th century London, which will be set ablaze on September 4 as it floats down the Thames River.

The installation will be the culmination of a series of events to commemorate the blaze that ripped through the City of London in 1666.

Jonathan Bartlett, the Production Manager bringing the London 1666 project together, said: “We have a huge challenge ahead of us to get the barges complete in the next couple of weeks.

“We need the weather to be on our side. We need everything else logistically to go according to plan.”

The Great Fire of London destroyed 13,200 homes as it burnt for 4 days in London.

A live feed of the re-enactment will be presented by Lauren Laverne on

The installation, London 1666, is part of London’s Burning, a festival of arts and ideas.
